Oil and Gas Investment Casting: NACE MR0175 Materials

Oil and gas components can face a difficult combination of pressure, temperature, corrosive fluids and, in sour service, hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). For cast components such as valve bodies, valve trim, pump housings and manifold blocks, choosing an appropriate alloy is therefore more than simply selecting a corrosion-resistant stainless steel.

Pump Casing Casting: Volute Design, Materials & Process

For pump designers and buyers, pump casing casting decides where the best efficiency point lands, how much load the bearings carry, and whether the unit passes hydrotest first time. Below: the volute features that matter in casting, material choice, casting routes, and defects to check before approving a sample.

CF8M Investment Castings: When to Choose Cast 316 for Your Component

CF8M investment casting is the right route for a 316 stainless component when the part has complex geometry, will be produced in repeat quantities, and would otherwise waste a large share of expensive bar or plate as machining chips. If your part is a simple turned shape needed in small numbers, machining from 316 bar will usually be cheaper. If it is a valve body, pump housing, impeller, manifold, or bracket with curves, pockets, or internal passages, a CF8M casting with finish machining on the critical faces is almost always the lower total cost.

CF8 vs CF8M vs CF3 vs CF3M: Choosing the Right ASTM A351 Grade

CF8 material is the cast form of 304 stainless steel: 18 to 21% chromium, 8 to 11% nickel, carbon up to 0.08%, and no deliberate molybdenum. Its three close relatives under ASTM A351 differ in only two ways. Adding 2 to 3% molybdenum turns CF8 into CF8M (cast 316). Cutting carbon from 0.08% to 0.03% turns CF8 into CF3 (cast 304L) and CF8M into CF3M (cast 316L).

CF8M Material: Composition, Properties, Equivalents and ASTM A351 Explained

CF8M is a cast austenitic stainless steel containing about 19% chromium, 10% nickel, and 2 to 3% molybdenum, with carbon held to 0.08% maximum. It is the casting grade that corresponds to wrought 316 stainless, and it is specified under ASTM A351 for pressure-containing parts and ASTM A743 for general corrosion-resistant service. Its UNS number is J92900 and its closest European equivalent is EN 1.4408 (GX5CrNiMo19-11-2).

What Is Shot Blasting? Media, Machines and When Castings Need It

Shot blasting is a surface treatment in which small steel or stainless steel particles are thrown at a metal part at high speed to strip scale, sand, rust, and residue and leave a clean, uniformly textured surface. In a foundry, it is the step that turns a rough, gray casting with ceramic still clinging to it into the part you would recognize from the drawing.

How to Choose the Right Investment Casting Manufacturer for Your Component

Picking an investment casting manufacturer on price alone is a mistake most buyers make exactly once. A foundry can ship a good-looking sample and still turn out to be the expensive option after you add tooling, machining, inspection, scrap, freight, and the two shipments that arrived late. The question worth asking is different: can this manufacturer make my part to the drawing, at the volume I need, month after month, at a total cost that makes sense? Answering it means looking past the per-piece casting quote.

What Is Investment Casting? A Practical Guide to the Lost-Wax Process

Investment casting is a metal-forming process in which a wax replica of the part is coated in ceramic, the wax is melted out, and molten metal is poured into the hollow shell that remains. Because the shell captures every detail of the wax pattern, the finished part comes out close to its final shape, with surfaces and tolerances that sand casting can’t match and machining can only reach at a much higher cost per piece.
